Houses of the Holy proved Led Zeppelin weren’t about repeating themselves. After IV cemented their place in rock history, the band swerved into adventurous territory, stretching across genres with confidence and flair.
“The Song Remains the Same” storms out with layered guitars before giving way to the lush sprawl of “The Rain Song.” From the mystical chill of “No Quarter” to the folk-rock sweep of “Over the Hills and Far Away,” the record shows Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones at their most inventive. Elsewhere, Zeppelin dabble in reggae with “D’Yer Maker,” playful funk on “The Crunge,” and pure swagger on “Dancing Days” and “The Ocean.”
Rather than chasing their past triumphs, Zeppelin leaned into experimentation. Houses of the Holy is proof that risk-taking can be its own kind of masterpiece.
My favorite tracks from this record are The Song Remains The Same, The Rain Song, and No Quarter. I'd love to hear yours too.
